About
Before & After Collage Maker is a mobile app designed for creating before/after photo collages.
The product started as a simple tool to combine two photos into a clean comparison layout. Over time, it evolved into a more advanced editor with customizable templates, adjustable split lines, visual effects, text options, and export formats optimized for social media.
The core goal is to help users quickly showcase transformations, whether in beauty, fitness, design, renovation, or creative projects, in a clear and visually engaging way.
The Challenge
Designing a scalable interface for Before & After Collage Maker required building a clear information architecture from scratch.
I was responsible for defining how menus and submenus are structured, how features are applied, edited, and removed, and how users navigate between editing states without friction. The challenge was to keep the flow simple while continuously adding new functionality.
At the same time, I had to work within technical constraints and align design decisions with development limitations, ensuring the interface remained intuitive and feasible to implement.
Role & Responsibilities
As the sole UX/UI designer on Before & After Collage Maker, I owned the end-to-end product design process. I defined the user experience, created all user flows, designed the interface, and prepared assets and documentation for development, while providing ongoing implementation support.
I also analyzed product metrics using Google Analytics, identified behavioral patterns, and formed data-driven hypotheses to improve engagement, retention, and feature adoption.
Design Process & Approach
The design process followed an iterative, hypothesis-driven approach. Each release introduced new functionality into the existing product structure, requiring careful refinement of flows, navigation, and feature hierarchy.
Design decisions were based on user behavior insights and analytics data. I formed hypotheses, validated them through product changes, and iterated accordingly to improve usability and engagement.
The approach combined:
– user-centered design principles
– platform-specific design standards (iOS Human Interface Guidelines & Android Material patterns)
– close collaboration with development to ensure feasibility within technical constraints
The result was a continuously evolving product that remained intuitive despite increasing feature complexity.
Handoff & Development Support
I prepared detailed design specifications and assets for development, ensuring clarity in interactions, edge cases, and platform-specific behavior.
Before each release, I personally tested the app to validate flows, UI consistency, and feature logic. I reported issues, clarified design decisions, and worked closely with developers throughout implementation.
I continuously monitored the build against the design system and controlled the quality of execution to ensure the final product matched the intended user experience.
Outcome
As the product evolved and feature complexity increased, maintaining a simple and intuitive experience became the main challenge. By restructuring navigation, refining editing flows, and validating decisions through analytics-based hypotheses, I ensured that new functionality did not overwhelm users.
Through continuous iteration and close collaboration with development, we improved usability and optimized key user journeys.
As a result, the optimized editing and export flow contributed to stronger engagement and clearer feature adoption, supporting the overall growth of Before & After Collage Maker.
