Educational mobile app for art & culture
Role: UX/UI Designer · Platform: iOS / Android · Year: 2021
About
WhatTheArt is a mobile app designed to help users immerse themselves in art history and explore famous artists in a structured, engaging way.
The product offers short lessons on major art movements and historical periods, introduces iconic painters and their works, and reinforces learning through interactive quizzes.
The goal is to make art education accessible, clear, and enjoyable – turning complex cultural knowledge into a simple, guided learning experience.
The Challenge
We designed the app structure from scratch – defining how art history should be organized into clear, digestible learning paths. Together with the team, we explored multiple structural concepts before selecting the most intuitive and scalable one.
Role & Responsibilities
I was responsible for designing the mobile application from scratch, including UX architecture, user flows, and core interface patterns.
Additionally, I collaborated closely with the team to refine the learning structure and ensure a clear, intuitive user experience.
I also developed the visual direction of the product, creating a distinctive style based on custom illustrations inspired by famous artworks.
Design Process & Approach
The design process started with defining the learning logic and overall product structure. We mapped user flows and explored different ways of organizing art history content into clear, step-by-step courses.
A big part of the process was experimenting with different types of quiz mechanics. Together with the team, we brainstormed formats on a physical whiteboard, sketched flows on paper, and tested paper prototypes before moving into digital wireframes.
This hands-on approach helped us quickly validate ideas and refine interaction patterns before transitioning to high-fidelity design.
Handoff & Development Support
I prepared detailed design specifications and documented interface behavior, states, and edge cases to ensure smooth implementation.
Throughout development, I closely collaborated with engineers, reviewing builds, clarifying interactions, and testing features to maintain design consistency and product quality.
Outcome
The result was a mobile app designed for fun and accessible art exploration, making art history feel engaging rather than academic.
The product combines structured learning with a playful tone and a recognizable visual identity inspired by iconic artworks.
WhatTheArt successfully transformed classical art content into a modern, interactive mobile experience that feels both educational and entertaining.
